FRACTIONS TO TAKE THE STAGE AS WINNER OF QUEENSLAND PREMIER'S DRAMA AWARD

Premier and Minister for Reconstruction
The Honourable Anna Bligh
16/11/2011

Fractions, a thrilling play by playwright Marcel Dorney, is sure to impress audiences when it opens this week at the Cremorne Theatre, QPAC, Premier Anna Bligh announced.

"Last year, Fractions was chosen from 94 entries received across the country as the winner of the 2010-11 Queensland Premier's Drama Award," Ms Bligh said.
"As part of this award, Marcel has worked closely with Queensland Theatre Company to undergo development workshops, several intensive dramaturgical sessions and rehearsed play readings.

"This development process is unique to the Queensland Premier's Drama Award, as no other playwriting award in Australia guarantees a professional production of the winning work.

"The time has now come for the world premiere of Fractions and I encourage Queenslanders to embrace the opportunity to see Marcel's hard work and dedication brought to our stage.

"Fractions is an engaging story about Hypatia, a brilliant female mathematician and philosopher who was responsible for the knowledge of her world.
"You will be taken back to a work 1600 years ago to challenge history through the eyes of a remarkable heroine.

"The play will feature a stellar cast including renowned stage and screen actress Jolene Anderson, acclaimed for her roles in the television series All Saints and Rush," Ms Bligh said.

Since the inception of the award in 2001, Queensland Theatre Company has developed 15 plays, employing more than 100 actors, writers and directors, and generating audiences of more than 12,000 to new Australian work.

"I would like to thank the Queensland Theatre Company for its continued commitment and enthusiasm to delivering this initiative.
"Thank you also to HotHouse Theatre, Playlab, Griffith University and the Australian Council for the Arts for supporting the award during 2010-11.
"My government is a supporter of the arts and this award program is the perfect way to showcase artists and theatre in Queensland.
"I'm sure you will warmly welcome and enjoy Marcel Dorney's new work."

The season of Fractions will run from 14 November to 10 December 2011 at the Cremorne Theatre, QPAC.
